Stocks were struggling amid surprisingly firm China manufacturing data on Monday, with further evidence that the world's second biggest economy is slowing, along with euro zone debt jitters, keeping demand for riskier assets in check.

Investors are keen to see if recent momentum in the world's largest economy could be maintained.

European equities started with modest gains after data on Sunday showed China's official Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) , which covers large factories, jumped to an 11-month high of 53.1 in March, beating forecasts.

ISM March manufacturing index is in focus. Economists in a Reuters survey expect a reading of 53.0 versus 52.4 in February, with some in the market saying this could be optimistic.

"The forecasts look optimistic and therefore, particularly if it comes in below last month's reading, you could see... stocks selling off again and bonds having a bit of a bounce," said Marc Ostwald, strategist at Monument Securities in London.

The Japanese yen, which tends to gain when investors' appetite for risk sours, pared losses as some analysts cautioned not to read too much into the stronger-than-expected figure from China.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Jason Aldean will always remember his first time.

That's why the Academy of Country Music Awards hold a special place in his heart.

"I won my first award ever at the ACMs," he said. "So yeah, it is special."

Aldean won the ACM's Top New Male Vocalist award in 2006.

His music caught fire with fans soon after, but it took longer for the industry to catch up. Last year, the ACMs were the first awards show to nominate him in the entertainer of the year category. The Country Music Association Awards followed suit in the fall.

Even though he lost both times, the recognition alone marked a breakthrough.

"Last year finding out we were up for entertainer of the year was obviously a big moment for me in my career," said Aldean. "To get nominated again this year, we're excited to be heading back."

Aldean has the second most ACM nominations behind Kenny Chesney, with six, including entertainer and album of the year. His No. 1 duet with Kelly Clarkson, "Don't You Wanna Stay," is up for ACM single of the year and vocal event of the year at the awards show, airing Sunday, April 1 on CBS.

He released the platinum-selling hit at the end of 2010, and over the past year and a half, he has performed it with Clarkson at the CMAs, the Grammys, on TV shows, and at the CMA Music Festival last June.

"It's crazy. It seems like that song was out forever, but it was a huge, huge song for my career, and obviously this year we got nominated for a Grammy and things like that. So it's just, that song has been amazing," said Aldean. "I can't believe it's still up for awards, but I'm glad it is."

The momentum behind Aldean's "My Kinda Party" album has been building since it was named album of the year at the CMAs in November. He's hoping for another album win on Sunday and has plans to follow it up with new material he recorded in December.

"I think anytime you win an award like that and you kind of get recognition from the industry on something like that that you've done, I think it makes you feel good, obviously, and have confidence in what you're doing," he said. "Does it change how I prepare for my next record? Not really. I think what won us that award was me going in and doing things the way I have always done them, and that's kind of the way I'm looking at our new record, too ... I can't wait for people to hear that."

Aldean also is up for male vocalist and video of the year for "Tattoos On This Town."

Galaxy merger to create lithium giant

The pending Galaxy Resources' merger with Canadian explorer Lithium One will create the largest pure play lithium producer by market value in the world, according to the Australian company's managing director Iggy Tan.

Under Galaxy's March 15 offer each Lithium One share would be traded for 1.8 fully paid ordinary Galaxy shares.

Lithium One has a cash balance of about $C10million and controls the lithium potash brine Sal de Vida development, which sits adjacent to one of the largest producers in the world, in Argentina.

Galaxy, which controls the Mt Cattlin mine in Western Australia, a plant in eastern China's Jiangsu province and an adjacent Lithium-Ion Battery Project, has a market capitalisation of about $320 million and is in the process of raising $50 million.

The miner started book-building on Friday, with an announcement expected this week on the outcome.

"What we are doing with the merger with Lithium One and potential capital raising of a minimum of $50 million we are looking at building a pure play lithium company with close to half a billion dollar market cap," Mr Tan said.

"We will be the largest market cap pure lithium company."

The merged company would also become the largest producer of battery-grade lithium, and the fourth or fifth largest producer in the broader lithium industry.

Lithium's role

Lithium mines typically take about five years to come online, but demand is surging for the commodity, Mr Tan said.

"Our view is that you need to find those resources, you need to bring them into production, in anticipation of this demand that's coming," he said.

"The lithium battery is now in your laptops, your mobile phones, your iPads. It's now moving into power tools.

"You can see that growth already has given about a 25 per cent year-on-year growth and think of how many iPads are sold today,? he said, referring to the popular Apple tablet computer.

The world uses about 140,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate a year, which Mr Tan believes will triple in the next decade.

Galaxy shareholders are expected to vote on the deal May 17.
