Clinton: Time running out for diplomacy with Iran

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton made clear Saturday that time is running out for diplomacy over Iran's nuclear program and said talks aimed at preventing Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon would resume in mid-April.

With speculation over a possible U.S. or Israel military attack adding urgency to the next round of discussions in Istanbul set for April 13, Clinton said Iran's "window of opportunity" for a peaceful resolution "will not remain open forever."

She also expressed doubt about whether Iran has any intention of negotiating a solution that satisfies the U.S., Israel and other countries that believe Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran contends the program is solely for peaceful energy and research purposes.

"We're going in with one intention: to resolve the international community's concerns about Iran's nuclear program," Clinton told reporters after attending a security conference in Saudi Arabia.

"Our policy is one of prevention, not containment. We are determined to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon," America's top diplomat said.

"We enter into these talks with a sober perspective about Iran's intentions. It is incumbent upon Iran to demonstrate by its actions that it is a willing partner and to participate in these negotiations with an effort to obtain concrete results."

Her remarks followed President Barack Obama's announcement Friday that the U.S. was moving ahead with penalties aimed at depriving Iran of oil revenue, while also working with Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf states to ensure ample global petroleum supplies.

Clinton prodded Gulf governments to develop a coordinated defense strategy against Iranian missiles. With tensions rising in the region, she said American and Gulf militaries should cooperate to improve maritime security as well.

Underscoring the limits of U.S.-Gulf cooperation, however, U.S. officials confirmed Saturday that the United Arab Emirates had shut down an American-funded democracy group, following similar Emirates action against a German organization this past week.

Discussions also covered ways to pressure Syrian President Bashar Assad to end a year of bloodshed from the uprising against his rule, but the focus was on Iran.

"It soon will be clear whether Iran's leaders are prepared to have a serious, credible discussion about their nuclear program, whether they are ready to start building the basis of a resolution to this very serious problem," Clinton said. "It is up to Iran whether they are ready to make the right choice. ... What is certain is that Iran's window of opportunity to seek and obtain a peaceful resolution will not remain open forever."

She said pressure from the economic penalties and international isolation was increasing on Iran to show it is serious about satisfying the world's concerns.

Iran and the six nations involved in the negotiations? the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China ? met in Istanbul 14 months ago. But the talks ended after two days with the sides unable to even agree on what to talk about.

Iran has used past talks to delay sanctions or try to divide the international front, while pressing ahead with its nuclear program.

Obama has underlined the need to give time for diplomacy alongside penalties. He said Friday that the U.S. would move ahead with potential measures against U.S. allies and other countries that keep buying Iranian oil. It was the latest step in the campaign to starve Iran of money for its nuclear activity.

The president said the world oil market was tight, but deep enough to keep the squeeze on Iran.

Clinton, who met Friday for almost two hours with Saudi King Abdullah, said the U.S. and Saudi Arabia share an interest in ensuring stable energy markets that foster economic growth.

She recognized the kingdom's efforts to meet increased market demand for countries weaning themselves off Iranian petroleum imports. She also said the U.S. and Sunni governments of the region would cooperate to counter Iranian threats against shipping in the Gulf and Tehran's support for "the Assad regime's murderous campaign."

Before heading to Turkey for a 60-nation "Friends of the Syrian People" meeting Sunday, Clinton lamented what she called the Assad government's shelling of civilian neighborhoods and targeting of mosques and churches.

She said these attacks have continued despite Assad's acceptance of U.N. mediator Kofi Annan's plan to end the crisis. That plan includes an immediate cease-fire and an eventual democratic transition.

In a concluding statement, the U.S. and the other countries at Saturday's meeting urged Annan to issue a timeline for putting his plan in place.

Western diplomats want to give diplomacy a chance, having invested months of effort to persuade Russia and China, veto-holding members of the U.N. Security Council, to unite behind a common approach. But they, like the Syrian opposition, fear Assad may only be playing for time.

Assad said he wants the plan to succeed, but insists the opposition must first commit to a cease-fire.

The West says the Syrian government must pull back its troops first, and U.S. officials say much of the diplomacy right now concerns the choreography of how the two sides would lay down their arms.

More than 9,000 people have been killed in Syria's violence since last March, according to U.N. estimates.

Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar are among the most impatient and have spoken about possible military intervention, from arming Syria's badly overmatched rebels to creating safe zones from which the rebels can operate.

"I believe we all agree on the need for an immediate cease-fire to the systematic killing," Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal said at a news conference with Clinton.

He said the Syrian government's crackdown has "reached the level, at the very least described as crimes against humanity, on which the international community should not remain silent."

Washington fears a military escalation could lead to all-out civil war and play into Assad's hands, considering his vastly more powerful military.

Clinton said officials meeting in Turkey would discuss "additional steps to increase pressure on the regime, provide humanitarian assistance despite the efforts of the regime to block access and advance plans for an inclusive, democratic and orderly transition that addresses the aspirations of the Syrian people."

Clinton also expressed concern about increased pressure across the region on civic groups, in particular those advocating political or democratic reforms. It was an apparent reference to the Emirates' move this past week against the U.S.-based National Democratic Institute and Germany's Konrad Adenauer Foundation.

Adrienne Rich: a voice for the marginalized

Adrienne Rich shaped her verse and prose into a passionate cry for justice.

?Adrienne Rich, a celebrated poet, feminist, and social activist who, through her thoughtful verse, challenged the American Dream and championed women?s rights, gay rights, and rights of the disadvantaged, has died. She was 82.

Ms. Rich died Tuesday in her home in Santa Cruz, said her son Pablo Conrad.

Over the course of her decades-long career, over which she published more than a dozen volumes of poetry and five collections of nonfiction, Rich picked up a Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award, Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, and Yale Young Poets prize for her passionate poetry that took up the causes of the marginalized.

As the precocious elder daughter of a Jewish father and Protestant mother ? a heritage recalled in her autobiographical poem, ?Sources? ? Rich came of age in Baltimore during the turbulent social upheavals of the 1960s and 70s, an experience that heavily influenced her work. She was known for her unflinching attention to such controversial topics as racism, sexuality, war, economic justice, and homosexuality.

One of her most celebrated books of poetry, ?Diving Into the Wreck,? published in 1973, garnered Rich a National Book Award and launched her into the top echelon of American poets. With its layers of meaning about treasure hunting, failed relationship, and gender hierarchies, Rich?s title poem was called ?one of the most beautiful poems to come out of the women?s movement,? by literary scholar Cheryl Walker, in the Nation.

It began:

I put on

the body armor of black rubber

the absurd flippers

the grave and awkward mask.

I am having to do this

not like Cousteau with his

assiduous team

aboard the sun-flooded schooner

but here alone.

Rich married Harvard University economist Alfred Conrad in 1953, with whom she had three sons. She eventually left him in 1970 to live with her partner, writer and editor Michelle Cliff. Soon after she left her husband, he committed suicide. A graduate of Radcliffe College, Rich taught at many colleges and universities including Brandeis, Rutgers, Cornell, San Jose State, Stanford, Swarthmore, Columbia University School of the Art, and City University of New York.

President Bill Clinton selected Rich for the National Medal of the Arts in 1997, the highest award given to artists. Rich refused it, citing the growing disparity between rich and poor in the country.

?The radical disparities of wealth and power in America are widening at a devastating rate,? she wrote in a letter addressed to then-President Clinton. ?A president cannot meaningfully honor certain token artists while the people at large are so dishonored.?

From Sports to Automotive: Ricky Bumgardner Jr.

Ricky Bumgardner Jr. Lebanon Ford PhotoLast August I began the daunting task of interviewing all of the wonderful people that make up what we know as Lebanon Ford. Little did I realize that it would take a lot more time and effort than I initially thought.

But fear not, for I have started the series once again!

Now, I?m not quite the?new guy that I was back in August, and in this situation, it?s actually the exact opposite. This week I had a chance to interview one of the newest additions to Lebanon Ford, Ricky Bumgardner Jr. Ricky had many interesting stories of his days working for the St. Louis Cardinals (even though he is a die hard Cincinnati Reds fan), his fear of heights, and his love and passion for Mountain Dew and Peppermint Patties. Read on for the full interview?

Zach Bello:?Ok, here we are again. For the sixth time now (we were interrupted every single time we tried to do the interview, we were hoping this was the last). ?So, tell me a little bit about yourself. And pretend I didn?t already ask you this question 5 times already?

Ricky Bumgardner Jr.:?Born and raised in Lebanon, Ohio. 28 long years in this fine town. Big sports guy, I played varsity baseball and varsity soccer for 4 years. Growing up sports was my life, it was my big thing, I took it very serious. A little bit more about me? I?m the father of one, her name is Mahaley, she?s about 18 months old now, definitely my life. It?s open perspective about life up for sure. Having someone else to look up to you and depend on you, can change a lot about you. I like to have fun, if people aren?t laughing, I feel like it?s a weird situation. I like to have a loose personality so if someone says hey you need to go talk to him, it?s going to be easy and no pressure. I don?t like to be that high pressure guy. And that?s about all I got?

ZB:?Well that?s pretty good.. It?s a start.. So you haven?t always been in the automotive industry, right?

RB:?Nope, no I have not..

Ricky Bumgardner JrZB:?So this is your first round

RB: This is my first round, greener than the grass in your front yard when it comes to selling cars.

ZB:?And how long have you been here at Lebanon Ford now?

RB: I?ve been here close to 2 months now, so I?m brand new to it.

ZB:?So what do you think about it so far?

RB: I think it?s definitely something that once I get rolling, it?ll be that perfect career move for me, it?s a rush. I mean, selling something like cars, it?s a big decision for someone to make, and I feel comfortable with people sitting in front of me and knowing that I am helping them make the right decision for them and whatever situation. The first car I ever sold I remember it being such an adrenaline rush, and I?ve been in sales before and nothing has felt like that.

ZB: I know you had a pretty interesting career doing some sports stuff before starting up in the car business, tell me a little bit about that.

RB: I did a small little internship with Wilmington College with the Sports Information Department and that got me to keep rolling with sports. After that I had an internship with the St. Louis Cardinals and then with the Florida Marlins. I was down at their spring training facilities and helping to make their media guides for spring training. My office was in the Cardinals clubhouse, so the memories that I got to make with them was really awesome. Being a lifelong baseball fan, it was really cool to be around a lot of the guys that I grew up idolizing every day, it was something you could never forget.

ZB: Reds fan?

RB:?Die hard Reds fan. That was the hardest part about going down there working for the Cardinals was the fact I was a Reds fan. They asked before I started what the hardest part about moving away from home and working would be and my response was ?The only thing hard about having this job is that it?s not for the Reds.? But I grew accustomed to it and they took good care of me. But definitely Reds all day, 24/7/365.

ZB: I love it. I can?t wait for Reds games to start again. I?d love to go see an Opening Day game once, I?ve never had the change.

RB: Oh, it?s great. The atmosphere is unbelievable. I mean you pay $150 to go to and see a game, then the next day you can pay $6 and see the same team play again. But you get to see the parade and it?s just a great time.

ZB: So, something not necessarily along the lines of the automotive industry, but, more personal. Where is the coolest place you?ve ever traveled?

Ricky Bumgardner Jr Lebanon Ford Picture

RB: You know, I?m not a big traveler, because I?m afraid of heights. I?ve never been on a plane before.. a little fun fact about me. I think I?ve been on one roller coaster in my entire life. Heights terrify me. But, something that I remember the most has to be going to Florida for spring training. I literally had to pack all my stuff and leave and realize that I wasn?t coming back home for awhile. There was definitely some cool places that I visited there. I love Chicago, going to Wrigley Field. If you?re a sports guy, that?s the place to go. I?ve been to Yankee Stadium, so when I travel, it?s usually for sports.

ZB: What?s your favorite part about your job now?

RB:?My favorite part is that at the end of the day, you are in business for yourself. If I?m not doing anything, then that really affects me. I?ve been in management for so long and climbed the ladder and quickly forgot what it was like to be a salesperson. Coming back and knowing that I?ve got millions of dollars worth of inventory sitting at the palm of my hand is a really cool feeling, and at the end of the day, I have to manage myself and know that I?m getting everything done that I want to accomplish.

ZB:?This one might be a little bit difficult to answer but I?m going to ask anyway?

RB:?(Sigh)

ZB: We all know from the inside of the automotive industry that there are a lot of misconceptions about who we are? If there was one thing that you could tell to everyone out there who may not completely understand us or the automotive world and you wish they would understand, what would it be.

RB:?I think the biggest thing they need to know is to get the ?oh he?s a car salesman? stereotype out of their heads. I know we hear that term a lot, but I think that stuff is out the window now. I know that if you come to me, I want you to know I?m not coming to harass you or make you think i?m going to try and make you buy something you don?t want. No, what I do is I want to come out and just talk, I love just talking to people. I love helping people out and I just want to have a conversation. I think it?s a disservice to come out and not welcome you. ?A lot of places won?t come out and just welcome you when you arrive and that is something I like doing every time. Maybe I?m more of a new school person anyway who doesn?t really understand how this all had been done in the past, but I think that?s my biggest attribute, is i?m being taught the new way. ?I want people to know that when they come here, it?s going to be an experience and doing business here doesn?t end after the delivery, it?s more of a long term relationship that we want to build. If you come and look at everything we?re doing here, you?ve got to come here and check it out. It?s a no brainer to not come and check us out?

Ricky Bumgardner Jr Picture

ZB: I?ve got two more questions for you. If you were dropped on a desert island and could only bring 3 things with you, what would they be?

RB:?(Silence?) Jenna (wife), Mahaylee (daughter), and? um? Is it hot there?

ZB:?Um, sometimes?

RB:?Ah, never mind, I?ll take getting?sun burnt. Ok so, Jenna, Mahaylee, and an unlimited supply of a combo I?d have to make so I could get 4 things, Mountain Dew and a Peppermint Patty combo value pack type deal.

ZB:?Well that?s kind of cheating, you?re asking for an unlimited supply and a combo pack of two things? But I?m assuming that Mountain Dew and peppermint patties are your favorite things?

RB:?I don?t think there?s anything better in the planet than a Mountain Dew and a peppermint patty. I?ll eat that all day.

ZB:?Last question. So what do you think separates Lebanon Ford from the rest of the car dealerships out there?

RB:?I mean, I?ve yet to walk in to a dealership that understands where the car industry is going. I think the coolest thing that we have that nobody else has is the myTech Team and how serious we take it. It?s awesome knowing that we have someone that is coming here to work with the vehicle technology and it?s the only thing he works on. I feel like customers are sometimes afraid with all this new technology and the fact that we have someone here who was brought on to help with just that is awesome. And how modern we are. You look at websites out there and look at ours, I think it really helps to separate ourselves. It?s not 1970 anymore, it?s 2012. I think we?re on the right track.

ZB: Any final words?

RB: You know, this whole peppermint patty and Mountain Dew talk, I think it?s time I go get one.

Manta Adds Social Connections to Online ... - Small Business Trends

Manta, an online community of small businesses, has added Social Connections features for its members, which help small businesses grow their referral networks. The enhanced offerings are designed to help small business owners manage their online reputations by increasing engagement with Manta members. The main components of the new features are that they?allow users to recommend a company as well as follow a company they have a connection with.

Manta, which was launched in 2005, and is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, has more than one million registered users and 87 million company profiles, business owners and professionals. Initially, it was designed to become a ?search destination for premium sources of business intelligence available via a pay-per-view sales model,? but in 2007, the company was thriving by offering detailed company information on small businesses.?More than 22 million unique global small business owners and enterprises use Manta each month.

The Power of Referrals

Manta conducted a survey of 1,000 small business owners?and found that 78% of them asked for recommendations, and 60% have given them for other businesses. Manta?s new social tools allow users to create recommendations for companies on Manta?s business listings. Companies have control over which recommendations appear on their company page.

?Unlike the traditional rating and review sites which have a very consumer-focused offering, Manta?s recommendations are business-focused and can be controlled by the business owner, allowing them to better manage their online reputation,? said Pamela Springer, CEO of Manta,??While some networks cater to individuals to help manage their career or others who help connect with family and friends, Manta is the only community dedicated entirely to helping SMBs market and grow their business.?

?Follow this Company? Feature

Another component of Manta?s Social Connections is the ability of users to follow companies they are interested in. Members can follow companies where they have worked, or organizations that they have been members of. Small businesses can also follow other businesses. Any notifications the business posts will automatically appear on the follower?s profile.

Manta?s new social component is indicative of more business sites jumping on the social bandwagon. The more interactive and engaging a business site is, the stickier it becomes, and the more traffic it draws.

Reasons that People Get Cosmetic Surgery

?

Unfortunately, cosmetic surgery has received a bad reputation over the years. Mention the term and some people will instantly think of boob jobs. But, there is more to getting cosmetic surgery than just getting a breast enlargement. It can be utilized for simple things such as replacing a broken nose, a chipped tooth or even a birthmark.

?

What is more important physical or internal beauty? Plenty of people would say it does not matter and to be yourself. However, if you asked this same question in a private setting, many of those same people will give you a different answer. Cosmetic surgeries are increasing in numbers. If there is something on your body that can be changed, chances are there are others who have already had the procedure done. Amazingly, there are plenty of people who opt for cosmetic surgery for various reasons. The following article is going to discuss some of the reasons why people are so willing to forego the risks that are associated with cosmetic surgery.

?

To Improve Their Looks

?

Obviously, the number one reason that people want to get cosmetic surgery is because they want to look better. You can call it either insecurity or vanity. You could probably call it both things. For the person who has had a bad overbite since childhood, it might be considered insecurity. For the woman who dreams of getting bigger boobs, it would be vanity. Either way, these patients want to make their outside beaty better. Cosmetic surgery can fix things with just a little knife.

?

To Make Themselves Healthy

?

Plenty use cosmetic surgery as a means to get healthy. Think about the obese person who is not able to lose a large amount of weight on their own. A gastric bypass surgery would properly suit this kind of patient. This kind of surgery will let the patient to get rid of big amounts of weight. Most people know that being overweight can cause other medical problems. This kind of surgery will let them get better. Diabetes and high blood pressure will not plague them. For the grossly overweight, cosmetic surgery would be a good option.

?

To Hinder Aging

?

A lot of people pick cosmetic surgery so that they will stop aging. They do not want to grow old. A sagging chin and wrinkles are hard for some people to see in the mirror every day. When they can not eliminate these things with drugstore products, then cosmetic surgery seems like a last option.

?

To Improve Self Esteem

?

Syrian rebels outgunned, strugging for supplies

GORENTAS, Turkey (AP) ? Syrian rebel commander Ahmad Mihbzt and his ragtag fighters grabbed their aging rifles to fight Syrian troops advancing on their village, but soon fled under a rain of exploding artillery shells.

"We will fight until our last drop of blood," Mihbzt declared a week later in this village across the Turkish border. "We just withdrew because we ran out of ammunition."

Like Mihbzt's men, rebels across Syria fighting to topple President Bashar Assad lack the weapons that can pose a serious challenge to the regime's large, professional army. Some rebel units have more fighters than guns, forcing them to take turns fighting. Because of ammunition shortages, some fire automatic rifles one shot at a time, counting each bullet.

Rebel leaders and anti-regime activists say rising gun prices and more tightly controlled borders are making it harder for them to acquire arms and smuggle them into Syria. This could tip the already unbalanced military equation of Syria's year-old uprising further in the regime's favor.

The opposition has suffered a series of military setbacks as regime forces have repeatedly routed them in their strongholds, most recently the eastern city of Deir al-Zour on Tuesday.

The weapons shortage has grown so acute that the opposition's disorganized leadership say only military aid can stop Assad's forces. Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Libya have spoken positively of the idea, but no country is known to be arming the rebels. The United States and many European countries have rejected sending weapons, fearing that it would fuel a civil war.

The weapons problems reflect the fractured, haphazard nature of the rebel movement. The uprising began a year ago with peaceful protests demanding political reform, inspired by the successful revolts in Tunisia and Egypt. Since then, Assad has waged a withering crackdown.

In response, some in the opposition began to take up arms to defend their towns and attack government troops. The local militias and breakaway units from the Syrian army mostly identify with the Free Syrian Army, a loose-knit umbrella group, but they operate independent of each other. The groups, numbering anywhere from a few dozen to a few hundred men, are largely on their own in finding weapons and supplies.

Defectors from the army, mostly low-level soldiers, bring arms and know-how with them. Most have only light weapons, such as Kalashnikov assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades. Rebel coordinators say groups have looted heavier weapons from army caches, and activist videos posted online show anti-aircraft guns and anti-tank missiles. But heavy weapons remain rare and have not significantly boosted rebel capabilities.

Smuggling from neighboring countries was key earlier in the conflict. But rebels and anti-regime activists now say Syrian forces have mined many of the smuggling routes from Turkey and Lebanon, and the Turkish and Jordanian governments have tightened border controls to avoid being pulled into the conflict.

Rebel frustrations are clear in the string of poor Turkish villages across Syria's northern border where more than 16,000 Syrians live in refugee camps. The camps host hundreds of rebel fighters seeking to regroup as well as smugglers who trade in livestock, cigarettes and gasoline.

Last week, some 200 rebels with light arms in the Syrian hill village of Janoudiyeh were no match for Assad's forces, which shelled the area before sending in troops, said Mihbzt, the rebel commander.

His forces fled across the border, about 6 miles from town, and into Turkey. But rising gun prices and strict border controls prevent his men from rearming, he said. So they plan to target border sentries to seize their arms or loot Syrian arms depots.

Other fighters who have found refuge in Turkey reported similar frustrations.

"We were forced to fire single shots in clashes because we don't have enough ammunition," said Majdi Hamdo. "I have two magazines for my Kalashnikov and one of them has been empty for the past month."

In contrast, analysts say Assad's army boasts 330,000 soldiers and highly advanced weaponry, most of it bought from Russia.

While many of its recent weapons purchases ? like air defense technology and anti-ship missiles ? can't be used against rebels, they point to a highly sophisticated force.

Joseph Holliday, an analyst with the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War who has studied Syria's rebels, said they will not be able to challenge the army without substantial help, though they can wage an effective insurgency.

"There is no possibility in the foreseeable future that they'll be able to pose a real challenge to or defeat the regime's forces in a pitched battle," he said. "They can continue to survive. They can attack areas where the regime is not in full control, and they can sap regime forces and get them to play the proverbial whack-a-mole that U.S. forces had to deal with in Iraq."

That means the violence could last. Already the revolt has become one of the bloodiest of the Arab Spring, with the U.N. saying more than 8,000 people have been killed.

"Because of the strength of the regime and because of the rebels' survivability and resilience, you're looking at a protracted conflict," he said.

Rebels in Syria's south typify this insurgent strategy, where small bands of fighters attack regime targets then disappear into nearby farmland. This week, they bombed a bridge on a key highway to prevent the army from bringing in more tanks.

Activist Raed al-Suleiman said his village of Nawa in Daraa province has fewer than 100 rebels, whom local residents support.

"They give them money, food or clothing," he said. "Their ammunition is all booty from the regime since no aid is coming from Jordan."

Ahmad Kassem, an FSA coordinator outside Syria, said rebels had recently looted weapons caches in Daraa and outside of Damascus, getting thousands of machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades, anti-aircraft guns and missiles.

"The seized weapons will give a qualitative jump to our military operations," he said. "It's not enough, but sufficient in the meantime to inflict harm on Bashar's oppressive army."

The Syrian government blames the uprising terrorist groups acting out a foreign conspiracy and cites insurgent attacks to press its argument. It has vowed to keep fighting.

It bars most media organizations for working in the country, and rebel and activists claims could not be independently confirmed.

Still, many rebels say the arms shortage restricts their abilities.

Rebel coordinator Mohammed Qaddah in Jordan said some 2,000 fighters in the countryside around Damascus have less than one rifle per man, forcing them to take turns or resort to simpler means.

"We use Molotov cocktails and homemade grenades in roadside ambushes because we're desperate," he said. "But we have no means to arm all our eager men."

AP Interview: Hungary's church law criticized

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) -- The head of the Council of Europe on Wednesday criticized a new law in Hungary that sharply reduced the number of officially recognized churches and changed the procedure they need to follow to gain that status.

Council of Europe Secretary-General Thorbjorn Jagland was in Budapest to meet with Prime Minister Viktor Orban and other leading government officials to discuss the church law and other recent ones regarding media and judicial reforms that have drawn international criticism.

Hungary's new church law, which requires parliamentary approval of churches by a two-thirds majority, sharply cut the number of officially recognized ones from more than 350 to 32.

Before the change, religious groups only had to register with the courts to gain official status and access to state subsidies and tax advantages.

"Our assessment is that overall it provides a generous framework for religious communities, but there are some problems," Jagland said of the law in an interview with The Associated Press. "We recognize that there was a need to avoid that some religious organizations or churches misuse the possibility to get public funding, but having said this, some of the provisions in the law are problematic."

He agreed with a report released Monday by the Venice Commission, the Council of Europe's advisory body on constitutional matters. It called the obligation to obtain recognition by the Hungarian Parliament as a condition to establish a church a "restriction on the freedom of religion."

The government has said the law was needed to filter out "business churches," for-profit organizations carrying out no religious activities. But the role of lawmakers in such decisions has raised suspicions that in some cases political considerations have outweighed applicants' religious and social merits.

"The political nature of this law is that Hungarian parliament is the one to decide which religious organizations or churches are to be registered," Jagland said. "This means that this issue can be politicized, which is not in accordance with the normal standards we have in Europe today."

There is now a list of qualifications churches must meet to be recognized, but lawmakers do not have to explain their decisions, leaving applicants in the dark about the reasons for their rejection.

Parliament's decisions can only be appealed to the Constitutional Court, a process criticized by the Venice Committee because by having to skip the ordinary courts the churches "lose one degree of protection."

Jagland said, "There has to be clear criteria for those decisions by the authorities and after that, if it is being disputed and sent to the courts, the courts should also have clear criteria for their decisions."

Heart tests for Spurs squad after Muamba collapse

By ROB HARRIS

AP Sports Writer

updated 9:14 a.m. ET March 19, 2012

LONDON (AP) -A cardiologist says he will test the Tottenham squad for potential heart defects on Monday at the request of the players who saw Bolton's Fabrice Muamba suffer a cardiac arrest and collapse in their FA Cup match.

Muamba is still fighting for his life in intensive care in a critical condition after falling suddenly during Saturday's abandoned FA Cup match at White Hart Lane.

The 23-year-old midfielder's heart only started beating on its own again when he arrived at a London hospital on Saturday night and the cause of his cardiac arrest remains publicly unknown.

"These cardiac arrests in young people are very rare, they affect about one in 50,000 people," Sports cardiologist Sanjay Sharma told Sky News television. "These conditions are exceptionally rare."

Sharma said he was already due to test "one or two players" at Tottenham on Monday, but added that now "the players have all demanded cardiac screening today."

"That involves taking a history relating to cardiac symptoms, which include chest pain during exertion or breath which is disproportionate to the amount of exercise being performed and blackouts, (and) asking about a family history because many of these conditions that can cause cardiac arrest are hereditary," he said.

"We then perform a cardiac examination and following that we do an ECG (electrocardiogram) which is an electrical tracing of the heart which looks for electric faults of the heart and a cardiac ultrasound which looks at heart muscle problems or problems with the heart values."

Meanwhile, Muamba's fiancee has been issuing pleas on Twitter for the health of the father of their son Joshua.

"Fabrice WILL!! Pull through because God is good," Muamba's fiancee, who goes by the name Shauna Muamba, tweeted on Monday. "Love u so much fmuamba keep strong we're praying for u honey ... where there is life there is hope."

As the time of a kid?s admission comes, it starts giving parents tight tensions. Many questions come and go in and from their minds. However, as per the government rules, the appropriate age of a kid?s admission in a school should be three years. If the parents feel that their kid is not prepared for school then they should make the kid appear for school willingness tests to agree on if a kid is apposite for the school admission. There are some documents that parents are required to submit during the kid?s admission.

There are other documents as well that they should present kid?s birth certificate, kid?s vaccination card and a transfer card or previous school statement if the kid has been to any other school. Education is very important aspect of our life which transforms a person to live an exotic life and more importantly a good social worker.

It teaches us all the attributes which is require leading proper lifestyle. Education makes one?s individuality an extraordinary one. It is something which provides us the power to move further and do something productive in near future.

Parents are required to undergo interview before their Childs admission just to ensure whether they are capable of sustaining school protocols.? Parents feel pressurize and their night go sleepless preparing for the school interview. It is very necessary that parents do a small research by communicating to the parents whose child is already admitted in a school. Such research will help them out in accepting the type of questions that are often asked to parents throughout the preschool interview. Every school has a definite schedule and they wait for the parents to get recognizable with this when they get their kid admitted.

Therefore, it is necessary for the school to carry out interview for both the parents and the children.

This is not only to protect the interests of the school but also to stay away from complications which can be arise in future connected to facilities and child development. Parents see many dreams while admitting their kids in school; they feel that it is the initial stair to provide the children with a good education so as to make them good human beings. The main purpose of the parents? discussion is to get a crystal clear depiction of the background of the kid, so that the teachers can get an enhanced understanding of the kid?s performance after the admission.

Parental participation in child edification is very necessary as they can only come to a decision what is apposite for the kid. There is basic reason for this involvement as they have managed their child lives since birth and resolve their trouble. Some parents have a belief that the child is not capable of handling complicated situations.? The responsibility of a parent does not end after the child?s education in fact they should become more conscious about their Childs performance. They should often visit the school and exchange conversation with the teachers so as to get a proper feedback of their children.? Parents? expectations also play a great role in influencing the child to do best.

Muscles can be toned, endurance can be refined, leadership qualities can be taught. But how do you train a hockey player?s brain? Can a coach work the areas of a player?s brain responsible for awareness and intuition?

The Israeli Air Force, of all people, has the answer.

More specifically, the answer comes from Applied Cognitive Engineering, or ACE, an Israeli technology company that has worked with the Israelis and the? U.S. Air Force, as well as NASA and the American military?s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Originally used to train fighter pilots, ACE?s IntelliGym is now being adopted by more and more hockey coaches.

The cognitive training system develops players? awareness and ability to make fast-paced decisions and has already made its mark on the hockey world in just three years.

Last summer?s NHL Draft boasted an impressive 16 selections who had trained with the IntelliGym, including top picks J.T. Miller, Connor Murphy and Tyler Biggs. (Photo: Applied Cognitive Engineering)

?We had no idea what to expect. It kind of looked like a video game. Sure enough, you could see how it related to hockey and increased your awareness and knowledge,? said Michael Cornell, a junior defenseman and alternate captain at the University of Maine, whose team used the IntelliGym last season. ?I think it was one of those things where it became almost second nature. I read this play differently because of the tools I?ve been using. It helped develop a high level of awareness for me.?

In the sports world, IntellyGym was first harnessed by a number of big-time basketball coaches, including Hall-of-Famer Hubie Brown, who now sits on ACE?s advisory board. When the team behind the IntelliGym noticed the incredible speed and action of hockey, they saw another area where they could provide a vital training tool.

?We were asking coaches how they train athletes to make the right decisions,? said Danny Dankner, ACE?s chief operating officer. ?For many of them, they thought being a smart player was a born trait. Either you were born that way or not. But, just like training your muscles, everyone can train their brain fundamentals. The percentage of improvement for pilots in on-air performance was tens of percent on average. If you want to train situational alertness and read-and-react skills and pattern recognition, these are skills that are harder to train.?

While other schools, including the United States Air Force Academy, have adopted IntelliGym in their hockey programs, the greatest results so far have been with the United States? National Development Team Program. In perhaps the greatest testament to the merits of the program, last summer?s draft boasted an impressive 16 selections who had trained with the IntelliGym, including top picks J.T. Miller, Connor Murphy, and Tyler Biggs.

But the number of NHL prospects is not the only statistic ACE boasts in touting the efficiency of its program.

Since adopting the IntelliGym, the United States national Under-18 team has gone from winning 29 percent of its games to a whopping 70 percent. Because the U.S. program has only used the IntelliGym for three years, the sample size for these statistics is rather small. But in the world of hockey, it?s championships that are the ultimate metric. And considering the U.S. U-18 team is a three-time world champion and the U-17 and U-18 teams have combined to win 10 of their last 13 tournaments, the results seem to be indisputable.

?Before I got here, I was at a festival in the summer and the guys from Israel were there meeting with different coaches. That did give me interest in their research,? said former NHLer and current U.S. national U-18 coach Danton Cole. ?The cognitive element where you instinctively do something can give you the edge between making it and not making it. This [IntelliGym] is something that can help you be better at that. Every time you do a little better, it adjusts and makes it harder and makes you better.?

The sample size is small and more results are likely needed to prove IntelliGym?s true value, but Dankner sees other, potentially greater, long-term benefits of his interface.

?We realized if you train the players? skills and they are more aware of their surroundings and have better working memory, you are less prone to be injured while playing hockey. It?s injury prevention because you are more aware of what is going on around you,? said Dankner. ?Injuries happen when you are hit and not ready. If you know your surroundings better, you are less likely to be hit.

?Looking at the medical records, we found a 25 percent decline in injuries related to being hit on the ice, like concussions. This is a small sample, but I think we have an interesting thing we will research shortly.?

The pool of data may be shallow right now, but Dankner believes his system may not just develop a better hockey player, but a safer hockey player as well.
